Stop the March for England 2013 (from Rough Music)

March for England morons plan yet another city centre St George’s day outing. Brighton plans another warm welcome.

Ever get the impression that some folk just can’t take a hint? Well it look as if the rhino skinned racists March for England (also known as the Toytown English Defence League) are heading back for another go at tarnishing the streets of the City-by-the Sea.

Despite having been comprehensively run out of town twice last year – on their annual St Georges day outing and then again on their June 4th revenge mission – they’re determined to put us all to the inconvenience of once more having to jeer at them/ block the roads with our bodies/ throw bottles/ set fire to bins in the street* on a Sunday.

This time round there’s no pretence that April 21st will be anything other an attempt to force unwanted and very un-Brightonian opinions down our collective throat. This isn’t a celebration, it’s a threat.

After they left town following this April’s humiliation , the March for England took to issuing idle online threats about bringing ‘a full EDL demo’ down to Brighton. Now that a national EDL demo is actually smaller than the turn out for MfE in its heyday (i.e under 200) we can safely take that as a hollow threat.

Across the country the English Defence League are in a steep nose-dive, but March for England supremo ‘Pompey’ Dave Smeeton clearly hopes to step into EDL Fuhrer Tommy Robinson’s recently vacated jackboots. Can the March for England take over where the EDL left off?

RM spoke to Stop MfE , the group behind last years successful counter-mobilisation ,“Brighton was a significant turning point for anti-fascism in the UK – we showed that a community united could drown out the message of hate. Others have followed suit and now the EDL are in decline”

See you on the streets!!

Death knell for the EDL? by Schnews

Brighton hinted at it, Bristol seemed to continue the pattern but today’s misguided outing to the London borough of Walthamstow showed the extent to which the English Defence League is now in a steep downward spiral.

This was intended to be a re-run of Tower Hamlets – a mission into darkest Muslamic country to liberate a corner of England. In the event around only two hundred fash made the trip down – to be confronted by a multi-racial crowd of over two thousand.

After getting pissed up and fighting amongst themselves at King’s Cross station the EDL gathered at Blackhorse Rd tube station. They were then marched in a mobile kettle along Forest Rd, the initial stage of their intended route to the Town Hall. The UAF were behind police lines occupying half of Forest Rd. Autonomous anti-fascists waited just down from the crossroads. The EDL approached at a snail’s pace entirely surrounded by cops.

As soon as the hapless leaguers came in sight the Anti-Fascist Network‘s banner was unfurled – triggering scuffles with the police and a couple of arrests. The cops soon realised that if a handful of anti-fascists were going to cause that much bother then getting the EDL past the UAF demo was going to be more trouble than it was it worth. The answer was to divert the EDL down the side-streets and try to smuggle them to their rally point.

SMASH GAZEBO

Meanwhile, realising that the EDL march had been blocked anti-fascists started breaking away in small groups getting round police lines to the rally point. Soon hundreds had gathered in front of a gazebo decorated with England flags and staffed by the EDL’s top boys. Unfortunately for them their minions were being held up by police a few streets away leaving leaders Tommy Robinson and Kev Carroll to have a rally/garden party behind police lines that barely got into double figures. The leaders attempted to string a few words together over their P.A. system, but were completely drowned out by anti-fascists. After they were bombarded with missiles and with the baying crowd threatening to break the police lines, the EDL’s police liaison officers told them to leave the area. Rumours that Kev and Tommy later indulged in a bit of sulky mutual recrimination and even handbags at dawn have so far been confined to the socialist press.

Eventually the fash were herded to the relative safety of a side street where police allowed them 15 minutes of unplugged whining before slowly marching them back. The EDL were remarkably silent for this once vocal organisation and at time’s it felt, appropriately enough, like a funeral cortège. Locals came out to disrupt the sombre mood and give them some abuse to send them on their way. One anti-fascist told SchNEWS “They recruited no-one, didn’t seem to have a point to their demo and basically looked like thuggish idiots. They’re not even frightening anymore”.

DON’T STAY ANOTHER DAY

Having been thoroughly humiliated by anti-fascists most EDL were probably looking forward to getting home, unfortunately for them though their day didn’t end there. The MET seemed to decide to kick ’em while they’re down and proceeded to kettle them for a few hours before finally nicking them all to ‘prevent a breach of the peace’. They were then apparently bused into the centre of London and released minus their coaches which plod had already sent packing.

Unsurprisingly many of the EDLers took their frustrations out on each other, with numerous arrests for fighting amongst themselves, including EDL steward and March for England regular Dave Bolton getting a kicking. The infighting moved online in the aftermath, with members declaring they won’t go on another demo (so much for ‘No Surrender!’) and openly calling for a change of leadership. The more loyal members have directed their anger at the police for not protecting them or forcing the march through – which is pretty pathetic for an organisation that claims to ‘go where we want, when we want’. Many of the same EDL members who threatened to arrive tooled up and hoping for it to ‘kick off’ are now moaning on Facebook about the lack of police protection when it did – be careful what you wish for.

Bangers and Fash (by Schnews)

Yet another brilliant write-up about Satruday’s events in Brighton by Schnews crew. Enjoy:)

Brighton – June 2nd

“You asked for it”– “you sowed the wind, now you’ll reap the whirlwind” , “no women and kids this time” “We are coming back to Brighton IN NUMBERS and you dirty lefty child abusing cunts will be dealt with” – These were just a handful of the online threats made by EDL supporters in the wake of the humiliation of EDL splinter group March for England on April 22nd.

The EDL’s football hooligan division, Casuals United, had been boasting on their blog that they would be returning to Brighton in numbers and strength to take revenge on local people. Six weeks previously, hundreds of locals stood side by side against right wing racists who had tried, and failed, to parade around the city under the banner of ‘March for England’.

Weirdly, Casuals United named 2nd June the day for their action, but decided to keep the details quiet. They were obviously caught between the stools of either keeping the whole thing completely offline and having tiny numbers or advertising it and having to deal with police and anti-fascists. In the end they plumped for calling the whole thing a ‘social’, as if coming to Brighton, the South Coast’s biggest tourist town, and buying a pint while in disguise was an achievement of some sort.

Brighton anti-fascists decided against an extensive counter-mobilisation on the grounds that the Casuals weren’t going to pull the numbers and a big call out would simply be crying wolf on their behalf.

Nonetheless on the Saturday around a hundred anti-fascist activists assembled in Brighton’s main shopping area, Churchill Square. This was to support the Brighton Uncut Great Brighton Street Party and the regular Palestine Solidarity campaign stall. They anticipated the arrival of some kind of flash mob as the fash gathered in Hove and around Palace Pier. (Well, most of them – two were nicked at Hove train station for cocaine possession). However all we saw were EDL spotters, at least two using their wives as cover. Police numbers were huge so the spotters were just politely encouraged to fuck off.

FASH BANGS

By 3pm the stalls and street party were winding down – co-incidentally this was exactly as we received reports that the fash had stopped skulking in pubs and in an astounding display of both Dutch and Colombian courage had sallied out of the pubs into Kemptown* to throw bangers around and make homophobic remarks. It was presumably at this point that well-known local EDLer Stephen ‘Sugar Plum Fairy’ Sands got nicked for letting off fireworks – something we all no doubt enjoyed when we were fourteen but possibly a little immature at 44.

*the thriving heart of Brighton’s gay community™

In response anti-fascists set off for an impromptu march down North Street, towards Kemptown behind a large ‘NO FASCISM’ banner. After dealing with a police roadblock and attempted kettle most of the anti-fascist crowd made it down to the Old Steine where the first face-to-face confrontations with the Casuals occurred. Mostly due to the numbers of cops these were confined to slanging matches but there was at least one exchange of blows. There were skirmishes along Old Steine and in Pool Valley bus depot. Anti-fascists were arrested and four were held for public order offences and one (ridiculously) for assault of a police officer.

The whole time this was happening more local people joined the mobile protests. Brighton Anti-fascists distributed a leaflet to explain their actions:

“Fascism grows if we let it. We are here to challenge the racism, Islamophobia and fascism of the EDL, Casuals United and the March for England. This has no place in our city or anywhere else.”

By 4pm police rounded up the majority of the Casuals, (around 35 of them) and marched them to the station where they were forcibly placed on a train and dispersed out of town. They were harangued by anti-fascists the whole way. A few more were arrested at this point for ‘racist chanting’. By the end of the day the fash had taken thirteen arrests meaning that even if we take their inflated estimate of a turn-out 100 at face value then one in seven of them were nicked. The spread of towns they came from means that this really was an attempt at a national mobilisation… oh dear.

In an effort to save face Casuals United have said that the vast majority of their supporters stayed hidden and undercover – moving around in small groups. Unfortunately for them, travelling to the City-by the Sea with all their racist and homophobic baggage meant that they did, in the end, reveal their true colours.

CASUAL ATTITUDE TO THE TRUTH

For those disappointed by the end of this year’s season of Game of Thrones there’s always the mystifying fantasy world of Suzy from Casuals United.

Their fantastic account of the weekend started with spotting “loads of UAF” up at the train station.

Actually there was no demo so we’re guessing that some of the idiots just ran into the crowd heading up to the Fatboy Slim effort at the football stadium and jumped to conclusions.

In the morning they came across “some unwashed anarchist scum on the beach in sleeping bags”..ermm do you mean homeless people? So much for the Soldiers off the Streets campaign.

Later, despite “not seeing a Commie all day” the Casuals apparently beat loads of us up.

“Ten people were arrested during these scuffles, mostly ours as several Anarchists were knocked out. A lot of ours then went to the police station to make sure those arrested were ok.”

In boring mundane reality no-one from either side was ‘knocked-out’. Even more hilariously not a single EDL supporter went to Hollingbury police station where their arrestees were being held (as Milton Keynes EDL member Darell Hobson found when he was released).

In the last analysis Suzy is still defiantly pretending that there were hordes of undercover Casuals in town but rather gives herself away with the last sentence “I know some people had genuine reasons not to turn up, but some people said they were going, didnt say they werent and didnt turn up. They should be ashamed and next time they say anything it will be treated as the shit it is.” Temper, temper dear.

The fascists present in Brighton on 2nd June will of course know that this is BS of the highest order and will perhaps begin to lose faith in their organisations and then hopefully, their politics.

Help to identify fascist photographer

(from indymedia.org.uk)

This character had been spotted on March for England and recent casuals united fail in Brighton taking pictures of demonstrators. On MFE he was visibly shitting it, but last Saturday he had been bit more brave until he got confronted by few Anti-fascists who politely told him to fuck off. Anybody can identify him?

Brighton Anti-fascists statement on Saturday events

Statement by Brighton Anti-fascists

In response to threats by far-right grouping Casuals United a couple of
hundred anti-fascist activists assembled in Brighton’s main shopping area,
Churchill Square. They had been gathered together quickly by call out from
Stopmfe http://stopmfe.wordpress.com/, Brighton Anti-Fascists
https://brightonantifascists.wordpress.com/, Brighton Unite Against Fascism
http://uaf.org.uk/tag/brighton/.

They waited the arrival of an EDL flash mob. The EDL’s football hooligan
division, Casuals United, had been boasting on their blogs that they would
be returning to Brighton in numbers and strength to take revenge on local
people. Five weeks previously, hundreds of locals had stood side by side
against right wing racists who had tried, and failed, to parade around the
city under the banner of ‘March for England.’

The waiting anti-fascists supported the Great Brighton Street Party put on
by Brighton and Hove UnCut http://brightonuncut.wordpress.com/ , which
arrived in Churchill Square to set up an anti-cuts picnic with pretty
bunting, pots of tea, cakes, poetry and plays. They celebrated community
spirit instead the Jubilee. Apart from the odd EDL spotter who thought
that wearing sunglasses and carrying a Primark bag was a good disguise,
there was no sign of any approaching fascist flash mob.

After three hours of holding the Church Square, anti-fascist set off for
an impromptu march down North Street behind a hastily painted NO FASCISM
banner. The fascists, who had arrived Brighton from places as far afield
as Hull, Milton Keynes and Bournemouth, had not yet had the Dutch courage
to leave their drinking holes. The anti-fascists thought they would
demonstrate instead. They headed for St James Street.

Of the rumours about where EDL actually were, one was important to act
upon. There were reports of violence outside gay clubs. The nastiest
tweetings from Casuals United in the run up to their revenge on Brighton
had been homophobic. Anti-fascists confronted EDlers on the corner of St
James Street and continued to confront them whenever they could be
identified EDL helped with this by waving their arms and shouting abuse
from behind police lines. Anti-fascists rushed around the police to hassle
and harangue them. There were skirmishes along Old Steine and in Poole
Valley bus depot. Anti-fascists risked arrest and four were held for
public order offences and one (ridiculously) for assault on a police
officer. Sussex Police say they acted to ‘prevent a major disorder’.

As the afternoon wore on, more local people joined the mobile protests.
Brighton Anti-fascists distributed a leaflet to explain their actions:

“Fascism grows if we let. We are here to challenge the racism,
Islamophobia and fascism of the EDL, Casuals United and the March for
England. This has no place no place in our city or anywhere else.”

Both BBC and The Argus report that as a result of protests the fascists
were ‘escorted’ by police out of the city
http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/9742009.Full_story__18_arrested_during_protests_in_Brighton/.
Anti-fascists who had dodged kettles but were split up by police lines
managed to regroup and confront the EDL one last time, forcing the escorts
down side roads to be bussed out from behind Brighton station.

Casuals United have put out some utter nonsense on their blog, exaggerated
their numbers, underestimated that of people who opposed them and claimed
they had a good day out. They can only lose more credibility. The fascists
present in Brighton on 2 June will know these are lies and will begin to
lose faith in their organisations and, hopefully, their politics.

EDL’s exploitation of young girls (by EDL news)

This article is too good no to re-post it 🙂 Real cynical face of EDL fully exposed by EDL news.

he English Defence League’s Exploitation of Young Girls

Blackburn Bernard Holmes - Child abuse images

By Gary Fieness Hastings and Simon Ireland:

The English Defence League, with their insistence that they have the welfare of children at heart have taken a major knock this week after EDL leader Tommy Robinson’s sleazy advances  were rebuffed by a 15 year old schoolgirl on Twitter …he then went on to subject her to a torrent of racist abuse.

As you would come to expect, Robinson refused to apologise to the girl, despite her stating she was open to an apology.

Earlier this week we brought you news that yet another EDL child sex offender has been outed.

Child sex-offender Matthew Woodward was found guilty of possessing child porn pictures and trying to groom a fifteen year old girl into taking pornograhic photographs.

Later in the week it was found that, as well as being an English Defence League member, he was also a Divisional leader of the Combined Ex Forces, a splinter group of the EDL with neo Nazi connections.

So far the EDL have kept silent about thi,s and refused to comment, much like the several other members of their organisation we have revealed as being involved in child abuse over the last two years. We find this rather strange, considering that they are holding a protest against Asians abusing children in Rochdale later this month.

Things have taken a further sinister twist this week as we reveal how English Defence League members have been taking photos of young girls from the Internet and using photoshop to turn them into images to promote race hate and violence.

A photographer has come forward and shown disgust at the far right group for using his images. It seems the little girl in question was the daughter of a family friend. This is the second time the photographer has asked the Blackburn Division to remove the image and so far they have failed to do so.

Two weeks ago, we asked Blackburn Division leader and convicted criminal, Bernard Holmes, if he had any intention of removing the photograph but received no response. Holmes has recently been released from prison for an attack on a Asian European MEP’s house and has previously served time for an unprovoked attack on a man outside a nightclub, leaving him with lifelong brain damage.

English Defence League Blackburn Division have had this image of a little girl along accompanied captions which blatently sexualize this picture of innocence for three weeks now.

This is not the only one we can reveal, the EDL have taken an image from the Internet and claimed it was a little girl hit by a bottle during their recent far right march in Brighton. As you will see, this is another instance of the EDL stealing pictures of young girls from the Internet and using the girls to propagate race hate and violence. It seems that girls under six years of age are fair game to use as propaganda for their race hate war.

The photographer and family friend of the little girl, took to the Blackburn Division’s Facebook wall today to request the removal again, asking why they would use the girl’s face for their mission, without the girl or her family getting any say in it.

Ever since a six year old was invited to speak at an EDL demo in Dudley a distasteful, nay sick. pattern has emerged within far right circles in this country, in which unapologetic use of child imagery has been promoted by the far right, most notably within EDL circles, with increasing regularity and equal prominance. This is a move that we should be both cautious and conscious about, but at the same time quick to condemn.

As if the Dudley incident wasn’t in poor taste enough, the use of that angle in the mystery surrounding the case of missing teenager Charlene Downes took the prominance of such behaviour to new heights of poor taste and bordering on exploitation.

Following the March For England (MfE) demonstration in Brighton in April, a thinly veiled front for an EDL presence on the South Coast, no disguise was made of this exploitation which has become centred on an alleged attack on what the EDL are referring to as a ‘Family Day Event For Patriots’ [sic].

It’s perhaps at this point that we should acknowledge that although the origins of MfE were at one time just that. Indeed the Gurkhas and Scouts have been involved on this march in the past, however, it has been hijacked unashamedly by the EDL who have gone to melodramatic lengths in their denial of this. It is of the upmost importance that we recognise the distinction between past MfE’s and the marches of 2011 and 2012.

The EDL under the guise of MfE have centred on an alleged attack on a 10 year old child at this years event. As there is a current investigation by Brighton Police we can neither comment or speculate upon that matter. It is in the hands of Law enforcement and the Police should be left free to conduct their investigation uninhibited by rumour and hearsay surrounding it.

However we feel that we should question the EDL and its supporters alleged propoganda surrounding the doctored images they are currently using to whip up an emotional response from the public and we would like to draw your attention to not one, but two, attempts to exploit children to promote the EDL’s cause :

The real image has come from an epilepsy site in the USA

The ethics of this behaviour are clearly questionable and the originator of the image makes no apology for its ‘creation’ and promotion. Chris Howard using his facebook admin name Laughing at the Muslim Defence League 2, gloats about creating the image.

Above: Chris Howard – originator of the ‘Brighton girl’ photo.

This is a man who makes no disguise of admiration of a former Balkan dictator responsible for the deaths of women and children

And we have this screenshot.

It should also be noted that he also makes no disguise of his admiration of mass child murderer, Anders Breviek who is currently on trial for the murder of children.

What is inexplicable in light of the above, is the willingness of the EDL and its supporters to promote the use of child exploitation even further by it’s blatant use of the latest image to be circulated. Even the quite-rightly outraged demands of the father, of the latest child are ignored by the EDL in its drive to provoke an inciteful and emotive reaction.

Something that has also been clear to see this week, is EDL promoting their forthcoming Rochdale demonstration against Asian child abusers, but seemingly having no interest in addressing the abuse of children amongst their own ranks. Furthermore, there has not been one directive from leadership to stop using images of young girls to promote their racist agenda. To us, the blantant use of their images is abuse of the young girls who they have decided to drag into their seedy race hate campaign.

EDL News are happy to co-operate with any of the family of the victims or any criminal investigations that results from our article.

Fash and Chips (story by Schnews)

Fash & Chips

Casuals United, the football hooligan wing of the EDL, made complete tits of themselves in Brighton today (2nd). In response to their humiliation at March for England the fash thought it would be a good idea to come back in even smaller numbers to have a go at the “rabid hordes of commie UAF gays” that passes for the population of Brighton.

Far right websites, blogs and Facebook pages are already attempting to claim that antifa either a) didn’t turn up, b) ran away, and/or c) attacked patriots unprovoked. In reality the knuckle draggers managed to skulk about in a few pubs (including Belushis, The Saint James & The Amsterdam) while around 100 antifascists stewarded the UK Uncut demo and Palestine Solidarity stall near Churchill Sq. Once the stall had packed up around 3pm the antifascists mobbed up and headed towards Old Steine to confront the racists.

Police halted the majority of the march halfway down North St, meaning only around 30 made it to the bottom of St James Street, where small groups of fash were skulking around making homophobic remarks. A spirited fistfight broke out, though the police waded in before a decisive outcome was reached.

The cops then rounded up most of the EDL and marched them to the train station, with antifascists haranguing them all the way. Many of them then left town with a few others heading back into town to find a pub to defend from Sharia Law.

Antifascists then regrouped for a well earned pint, while others headed to Hollingbury police station to pick up arrested comrades. So far at least 5 antifascists and 5 fascists have been nicked today.

A more complete & concise roundup of the day’s events will be posted in the near future.

Up the punks!!

Brighton EDL proves their anti-racist credentials… yet again :)

Not a day goes by without EDL trying to convince everybody that they are against racism and as a matter of fact they are most progressive organization currently existing in UK. Well, here’s screen from their own Facebook page proving their anti-racists credentials 😉 Better luck next time eh boys and girls?

FASH, BANG, WALLOP (reposted from Schnews)

Quote of the day – “Well who thought it was a good idea to organise these two demonstrations on the same day? Surely it was obvious there would be problems” – random Brighton theatre-goer/by-stander

Yesterday’s counter-protest against the March for England exceeded all expectations. Although the fascists did march they did so inside a mobile police kettle continuously surrounded and occasionally bombarded by counter-protestors. Their march route was cut short and for once the chant “Police protect the fascists” was 100% accurate.

Last year the police successfully kettled most of the anti-fascists, allowing the MfE free rein through the city. They took full advantage of the opportunity to hand out racist abuse and attack alternative looking types. Brighton anti-fascists were determined to avoid a repeat.

Aware that the cops plan was to push the march straight down the road from the railway station to the sea front, the anti-crowd was encouraged to spread themselves thinly along the route. This prevented a pre-emptive kettle.

The MfE were due to start their procession at midday, but due to the geography of the area no-one in the counter-demo had a direct view of their meet-up point at the station. A strange High-Noon quiet settled over the town centre as the counter-protest shuffled and waited, watching police movements for a clue as to what might happen. Numbers gradually built up, serenaded by the bizarrely soothing tones of dub from a punk- soundsystem.

For a while it looked as if the cops were going to throw the towel in and refuse to allow the MfE out of the station. At half-twelve jogging lines of cops and the arrival of horses let everyone know that the fash were on the move.

One eyewitness at the station told SchNEWS “From where they were mustered, they could only see a tiny part of the counter-demo, mainly the UAF contingent. They were very cocky. As soon as they turned the corner and saw the opposition their faces fell”. By this point there were around 500 anti-fascists on the streets.

The nationalists had only mustered around 100, a third of what they had predicted. Yesterday SchNEWS reported that “there was little if any English Defence League insignia actually on display”. Since then we’ve been told that EDL banners and an Essex Infidels flag were unfurled at the station. In reality this was a moot point as the main body of march consisted of known EDL faces, including virtually all of Brighton and Portsmouth EDL with the addition of various unsavoury characters such as Jeff Marsh of Casuals United. Despite the presence of a few token women and kids the march was overwhelmingly male, bald and fat.

It didn’t take long after the march set off before the first few antis were in the road behind a banner. From then on the march became a rugby scrum as the cops used horses, truncheons and pepper spray to force the MfE through. Every time the cops broke through an anti-fascist line, another would form ten or twenty metres down the road.

BATTLE OF CHURCH ST

The pressure only intensified as the police decided to abandon the planned high-profile route and try to smuggle the nationalists down the back-streets. Anti-fascists got ahead of the game and running around the side got in front of the march on Church St to build barricades. Fascists and police came under attack with bottles. It was at this point that some-one set a bin on fire, irritating everyone, right and left, with the acrid smoke.

What was totally remarkable was the level of solidarity for the counter-demo by folk from all walks of life in Brighton. There was no support for the MfE. Pensioners and kids shouted abuse at the fash. The UAF stood shoulder to shoulder with Antifa punks.

Eventually the MfE, numbering around a hundred ended up in their pre-prepared pen, – unfortunately for them so did almost the entire counter-demo. They then had to put up with two hours of being jeered at by the surrounding mob before cops rushed them back to the station to be dispersed. Their march was dogged every step of the way but as they were leaving the crowd was happy to let the cops rush them along. Anti fascists went on to enjoy a pint in the sunshine.

MARLBOROUGH LIGHT-WEIGHTS

Despite the usual online japery the few EDL who tried to make a stand outside the cordon were quickly seen off. Joel Titus, self proclaimed leader of the EDLs youth wing was spotted skulking with a crew of half-wits in the Marlborough pub, one of the few bars that would serve them on the day. A handful of anti-fascists were able to send them packing. Virtually no other pubs would serve the MfE and they failed to maintain a presence in town after they were dispersed.

Is this the end of the March for England in Brighton? Watch this space!

Final word to Brighton Anti-fascists “Brighton showed the racists today that their brand of hatred isn’t welcome in our city. Brighton has always historically seen off the fascists, in the the thirties , the seventies and now today. Big thanks to all who turned out! – Up the punks!”

Opposing the March For England in Brighton

MFE fact file

March for England Briefing

The weekend around St George’s Day will once again see the arrival of the March for England in Brighton. As with each time in the last four years there will be a counter demonstration. This briefing by Brighton anti-fascists aims to give a quick overview of this controversial event and explain why we are opposing it.

Who are the March for England?

The March for England  (MfE) is both an event and an organisation. Although the annual march in Brighton is the main public event organised by the group, their banners can be found at many other right wing protests across the country.

MfE’s central claim regarding the Brighton march is that it is ‘a harmless family day out’. We consider that to be far from the truth.

MfE membership overlaps significantly with other groups such as the English Defence League English Nationalist Alliance, Stop Islamification of Europe and Casuals United. Their focus is on a sense of English rather than British identity, and opposition to Islam. They have also recently started to get excited about a possible war with Argentina.

They are best understood as a far-right splinter group, part of the ‘counter-jihad’ movement currently on the rise in Europe. Of course the counter-jihad’s most famous exponent to date is Anders Breivik, the Norwegian mass-murderer.

Although the MfE claim to simply be patriots – what they mean by ‘english values’ swiftly degenerates into racism, specifically (although not limited to) anti-muslim statements. They conflate the activities of a tiny minority of pro-sharia law activists with the entire Muslim population. The word ‘muzzie’ , the modern day version of ‘paki’ is never far from the discussion on their forums or facebook profiles.

During their last outing in Brighton the MfE openly displayed English Defence League flags and chanted “Allah is a paedo” – a nonsensical and offensive slogan. The display of a pink LGBT union flag notwithstanding they also directed homophobic abuse at passers-by. This year there have been desperate pleas by organisers to make this a ‘no colours’ event i.e that EDL members should leave their flags at home. Brighton anti-fascists anticipate that these pleas will be ignored.

History

In June 2009 the March for England organised a protest in Luton, to counter an earlier demonstration by Muslims against returning troops.  The event ended in violence with Asian owned businesses attacked- Daily Mail report

Subsequently long term  MfE spokesman and organiser  ‘Pompey’ Dave Smeeton  denied having anything to do with organising the event.

It was this riot that gave birth to the English Defence League, of whom many if not most of the MfE membership are enthusiastic supporters. English Defence League demonstrations are a by-word for drunken racist hooliganism.

Since then March for England have been a constant presence on English Defence League demos – as these photos of a recent event in Barking show

For the purposes of demonstrating in Brighton the MfE try to distance themselves from the the more overtly violent street groups – however as this discussion on Casuals United shows – this is for show only, MfE are well aware that a total ban on the EDL membership would significantly impact on their turn out.

History in Brighton

Why do MfE come to Brighton? As far as we can tell the majority of those who can be termed organisers live in Portsmouth. They congregate annually at the train station for the simple reason that the majority of them travel from outside the area for their day out by the sea side. The local membership of the EDL consists of less than a dozen people.

The answer is because they consider Brighton to be a centre for ‘anti-english’ activity.  They come to Brighton specifically because of it’s reputation as a tolerant, cosmopolitan, left wing city. They are aware that their message isn’t welcome but delight in bringing it here anyway. They do this under the guise of a ‘family fun day out’ – something a swift glance at the profile of those attending shows is very far from the truth.

Timeline

  • 2008
Their first Brighton outing was in April 2008 and was unopposed . Eyewitnesses reported racist abuse directed against the public, but we have no direct (i.e recorded) evidence for this.
  • 2009
2009 saw another largely unopposed demonstration.
  • 2010
This year saw the first significant counter-mobilisation by anti-fascists to the MfE as by then it was seen as a front group for the then expanding EDL.Unite against Fascism (UAF) staged a counter demonstration against the MfE, taking the form of a rally opposite the King and Queen pub on the Old Steine, the end point of the march. Other non-aligned anti-fascists actually joined the MfE, by taking them at their word as being anti-racists and joining their parade to announce why . They were roundly condemned by the MfE on the day and received a great deal of abuse for handing out a leaflet celebrating a different kind of pride in Englishness (see “England For All”, right). One MfE marcher, Ryan Williams from Dorset plead guilty to assault (in October 2010) following an incident on this march. This intervention by antifascists provoked the English Nationalist Alliance, a more overtly racist grouping run by Bill Baker, to return on the Monday of the August Bank Holiday weekend. This time round the ENA mustered around fifty supporters and due to a large mobilisation by Sussex Police were able to march from the train station to the Old Steine although their march was re-routed due to action by anti-fascists. Chants on this march included “You lot all take it up the arse” and “Allah is a paedo”. Although this wasn’t billed as an official MfE event it still features on their website. One prominent member of MfE – Steven Sands was arrested for GBH after knocking out and hospitalizing an anti-fascist protestor during an ambush outside the Fountainhead pub. Charges were subsequently dropped despite the fact that at least one police office recorded having witnessed the assault.
  • October 2010 – the English Nationalist Alliance attempted to disrupt a SMASH EDOdemonstration with leader Bill Baker saying “SmashEDO is an organisation funded by Palestinian Exiles and Islamic groups to generate socialist political activities against companies that provide military technology to our armed forces so as to weaken our capabilities in carrying out military activities in the Middle East conflict and Afghanistan.” The organisation claimed to have infiltrated Smash EDOs ranks.Although organiser Bill Baker didn’t actually make it on the day,  MfE steward Mark Crosby was involved and was arrested for Affray.
  • 2011
On April 5th a mob of around 30 EDL including known faces from the March for England such as Mark Crosby attacked a meeting being held by Unite Against Fascism on the subject of ‘Defending Multiculturalism’. Only the determination of a handful of people on the door prevented them gaining access.Just three weeks later, Brighton saw a huge mobilisation by Sussex Police to push the MfE through town during the Royal Wedding bank holiday weekend. They were met at the station by a significant counter-mobilisation of over two hundred. However a large police operation escorted the right-wingers through town while holding the counter-demo in a pen.
  • 2012
March 17th Brighton EDL, headed up by none other than Mark Crosby staged demonstrations outside a book launch and later met up at Churchill Square to harass the Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s stall. Three of them were arrested.

Our Response

We stand in opposition to the March for England not because we are anti-free speech. We have no problem with anyone celebrating their national, regional or ethnic identity or criticizing organised religion. We are not calling on the police or local government to ban this march. However we believe that ideologies of hate flourish when they are ignored and want the people of Brighton to show that the hate speech of the English Defence League isn’t welcome here or anywhere. The MfE were given the benefit of the doubt the first few times they appeared in Brighton, a mark perhaps of our city’s laissez-faire attitude and reputation for tolerance, however they’ve used their platform to spread a message of hate and that we should not allow.

We aim to bring the people of Brighton out onto the streets to let the MfE know exactly how welcome they are.
