STOP THE EDL MARCHING ON TOWER HAMLETS

In recent months, there has been a sharp rise in racist attacks and attacks on mosques, including arson and nail bombings. EDL marches are helping create and sustain and environment where such attacks are possible. It is important that we stand up and stand united against their presence.

The Anti-Fascist Network is calling for as many people as possible to come onto the streets on Saturday 7 September. The more people that attend, the safer and more empowering it will be for all of us. Ban or no ban, we want to make sure that the EDL do not get to intimidate people and parade their hatred through the streets unopposed.

Brighton Anti-fascists will be joining anti-fascists from the region opposing the English Volunteer Force (EVF) protest outside the Home Office Immigration building in Croydon this Saturday, the 27^th July. The EVF aim to demonstrate against what they view as the Home Office’s ‘soft touch’ on immigration. As always, we will oppose the fascists wherever they appear and we gladly stand alongside the trade unionists and anti-fascists who stand against the far right.

However, we are clear that we are there to oppose the fascist presence, and what they stand for – not to defend to immigration system as it stands. We do not view it as a public good under threat. While not conflating government policy with those who work there, we oppose the British immigration system as we oppose the fascists, and stand in solidarity with those facing all racist violence, whether from UKBA thugs or the EDL/EVF.

On Saturday 27th July a splinter group of the EDL called the English
Volunteer Force have called a demonstration outside Lunar House in
Croydon, which is the main asylum seeker processing centre in the UK,
where asylum seekers and migrants are obliged to come by the Home Office.
The EVF are more openly and virulently racist that the EDL and will be
supported by a number of other far-right splinter groups.

Their aim is to scapegoat migrants for many of the problems of society and
to stoke up anti-Muslim hatred.
They aim to capitalise upon anti-immigrant feeling connected with the rise
of UKIP and on the recent surge in Islamophobia since the killing of Lee
Rigby in Woolwich in May.

Lunar House will be operating on the day and migrants, many of whom are
vulnerable people having fled torture and abuse, will have to queue
outside suffering abuse from
fascists.

The EVF are being opposed by a broad coalition of local residents and the
local Trades Council, South London Anti-Fascists, the local Green Party,
UAF, One Croydon, Croydon SolFed, the Anti-Fascist Network and others.

Say no to racism, Islamophobia and migrant scapegoating – Join us on the
27th to stand together against the hatred of the EVF and to defend
people's right to seek asylum.

The EVF have just announced their demonstration will start at 12 noon,
an hour and a half earlier than their original time.
